NIGERIA NEEDS NEW RADAR SYSTEM TO ENSURE FLIGHT SAFETY                                                                                                           27-11-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has called for the urgent acquisition of a new radar system to enhance flight safety and efficiency in the country’s airspace.

The Director of Air Traffic Services, NAMA, Mr. Tayo John, during a recent visit to the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria (TRACON) site in Kano, expressed concerns about the current system’s limitations, despite recent modernization efforts.

“The current radar system, while automated, is obsolete and lacks the capabilities of modern radar systems used in other parts of the world. The system’s producer, Thales of France, has introduced newer versions, but Nigeria’s system remains outdated.”

He emphasized that the new radar system is crucial for ensuring the safety of air navigation and protecting the flying public.

The outdated system, he noted, is susceptible to power outages and technical failures, which can compromise flight safety.

Mr. John also commended the efforts of air traffic controllers and other NAMA staff in ensuring the safety of flights, despite the challenges posed by the aging infrastructure.

He urged them to remain committed to their duties and prioritize the safety of passengers.
