REPS PROBE $4.6BN HEALTH GRANTS FROM GLOBAL FUND, USAID

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into over $4.6 billion in grants Nigeria received from the Global Fund and USAID between 2021 and 2025 to fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.

Chairman of the House Committee on Infectious Diseases, Amobi Ogah, said the probe aims to ensure accountability and proper use of the funds, noting that Nigeria cannot keep relying on foreign partners to manage grants meant for its citizens.

Health Minister Muhammad Pate welcomed the move, saying it promotes transparency, accountability, and local ownership of health programmes. He, however, urged Nigeria to gradually reduce dependence on donor aid.

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, represented by Ibrahim Isiaka, said the probe underscores the parliament’s commitment to transparency in health funding.
