CONSTITUTION REVIEW COMMITTEE INAUGURATED 26-02-24
By Sadiq Aminu Constitution Review Committee for the amendment of 1999 Constitution has been inaugurated
At the inauguration in Abuja, the Speaker House of Representatives Dr Tajudeen Abbas, expressed optimism that the amendment will address agitations and concerns of Nigerians.
There has been continuous agitations on the need to review the nation’s constitution to address some of the yearnings of the citizens which had not been adequately addressed by the constitution,
It is on this note that the House of Representatives set up Committee with 24 months timeline mandate to engage with Nigerians and other critical stakeholders in Nigeria project to effectively addressed the yearnings of the citizens through constitutional amendment.
The Speaker House of Representatives Dr Tajudeen Abbas, explained that the rapid changes in the population of the country as well as dynamism in the agitation of the citizens called for the amendment of the constitution to accommodate the concerns of Nigerians.
In an address, the Deputy Speaker House of Representatives Mr Benjamin Kalu who also doubles as the Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, enumerated some critical areas to be amended to include
decongesting exclusive list, assigning important roles to the Traditional institution in the constitution, greater representation of women in governance process, State Police, Local Government autonomy, appointment of Mayor for FCT among others
The President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio represented by his Deputy, Senator Barau Jibrin, while urging the Committee to be opened minded to accommodate divergent views, pointed out that the aim of the review was to make governance process more functional.
The Chairman Conference of Speakers of State legislatures of Nigeria, the Speaker Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin, pledged the States Houses of commitment to ratify the amendments made by the National Assembly.
