AREWA YOUTHS HAIL SUPREME COURT VERDICT ON RIVERS STATE, URGES COMPLIANCE                                                                                                           01-02-25

By Sadiq Aminu                                                      The Arewa Youths for Peaceful Coexistence have commended the Supreme Court’s recent rulings on the political crisis in Rivers State, describing the verdict as a victory for democracy and the rule of law.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the group’s National President, Bature Haruna, emphasized that the February 28 judgment reaffirmed constitutional governance by nullifying the state’s local government elections, affirming the legitimacy of the 27 lawmakers led by Martin Amaewhule, and reserving its ruling on their defection case.

The group stressed that all legislative actions taken by the four-man Assembly, including budget approvals and appointments, are now invalid. They called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to respect the court’s decision and restore democratic governance in the state.

“No democracy can survive on illegality,” Haruna stated, condemning the prolonged sidelining of the Rivers State House of Assembly. He warned against any attempts to undermine the judgment or suppress duly elected representatives.

The Arewa Youths praised the judiciary for upholding constitutional principles and urged civil society groups and political stakeholders to support the full implementation of the ruling.

“This is not just a victory for Rivers State but for democracy in Nigeria,” the group stated, reaffirming its commitment to peace, good governance, and the defense of democratic institutions.

Also speaking, Mr.Mark Okpanachi Ogah, the FCT Chapter Coordinator of the group called on all Nigerians to remain vigilant in protecting the country’s democratic system.

According to the group, the Supreme Court’s ruling is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape in Rivers State, as stakeholders await further legal developments.
