REPS TO DEBATE 87 CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT PROPOSALS

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The House of Representatives will soon debate and vote on 87 proposals for constitutional amendments.

Speaker Dr. Tajudeen Abbas announced this during the House’s resumption from the 2025 Annual Recess, saying Nigerians eagerly await the outcome following the successful zonal and national public hearings.

The proposals focus on key areas such as devolution of powers, local government autonomy, judicial reform, and socio-economic rights. Dr. Abbas urged lawmakers to complete voting and send approved amendments to State Assemblies before December for timely concurrence ahead of the elections.

He also assured Nigerians that electoral reforms will be finalized before 2027 to strengthen the nation’s democracy, reduce election disputes, and promote inclusive and transparent voting processes.

Highlighting the House’s performance, Dr. Abbas noted that from June 2023 to mid-2025, the House considered 2,263 bills, passed 237, and secured 50 presidential assents, covering sectors like power, education, cybersecurity, and tax policy.

He reaffirmed the House’s commitment to security, economic recovery, job creation, and citizens’ rights, urging members to remain united in addressing national challenges.
