FEDERAL GOVERNMENT REITERATES IT’S COMMITMENT TO EFFECTIVELY IMPLEMENT THE NATIONAL POLICY ON INCLUSIVE EDUCATION                                                                                                                                    13-11-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                            The Federal government has reiterated its commitment to effectively implement the national policy on Inclusive education.

The Minister of State, Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad stated this in Abuja at the annual inclusive education conference, organised by the British Council.

Dr. Suwaiba who affirmed the Federal government’s commitment to Inclusivity in education, pledged to do more as access to quality education was a right for every child irrespective of their background, ability or disability.

She expressed the belief that the conference would come up with stronger recommendations for a successful implementation of the policy on inclusive education.

The Acting, Country Director of the British Council, Mr. Besa Chilufya said to achieve inclusive education, a multi-faceted approach that would address policy, practice, and culture at all levels was required.

Mr. Chilufya stated that essence of the conference is to identify strategies that would translate the policy into actionable solutions.

A former commissioner for education in Lagos State, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo who spoke on the theme of the conference, “bridging the gap between inclusive education policy and practice”. identified some of the challenges to inclusive education to include funding.

The conference witnessed the inauguration of a National working Committee on Inclusive education with members drawn from the relevant government agencies, civil society groups, development partners and the British Council.

There were goodwill messages from development partners such as UNICEF, Plan International and USAID with a call for more awareness on inclusive education, collaboration and investment .
