TRUMP SAYS HE CAN STILL IMPOSE TARIFFS DESPITE COURT RULING

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

US President Donald Trump on Sunday said he still has the authority to impose tariffs despite a recent ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States striking down his global tariff plan.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he has the “absolute right” to charge tariffs in another form and has already begun implementing them.

Following the court ruling, Trump imposed a 10 percent tariff on US imports through an executive order.

The United States last week also launched trade investigations into about 60 economies, including China, the European Union and Japan, to examine issues such as forced labour and practices that may restrict US commerce.

China criticised the move, urging Washington to correct what it described as unilateral and discriminatory actions while warning against attempts to create new trade barriers.

Officials from the United States and China met in Paris on Sunday for a new round of negotiations expected to last two days.

Trump also criticised federal judge James Boasberg after he blocked subpoenas in an investigation involving Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. The president has repeatedly attacked Powell over the central bank’s interest rate policies and has called for lower rates.
